[Diy_efi] Getting started with PIC or Atmel AVR or whatever

Hi Peter,

Just three weeks ago I started with the Atmel AVR series for a
microcontroller controlled ignition for my bike.

As a programmer I use the 'Fun card programmer' and IC-prog
(http://www.ic-prog.com/). (For the fun card programmer see the supported
programmer types on the ic-prog page).

The programmer is simple, cheap, and though it is not 'professional' or
'fail-safe', it does the job it has to (programming a few prototypes)
extremely well.

I use the 90S2313 though the 90S2323 or 90S2343 would do just as well. It's
just a matter of availability. (my local store carries the 2313).

What I especially like about the AVR series is the documentation: on the way
to my first prototype, there was *not a single* point in the datasheet that
I misinterpreted. I don't know if this works for you, but it certainly did
for me.

The devices are cheap, simple, and fast (approx 1 Mips/MHz), and 10 MHz max.

I/O is extensive (esp. on the 2313), and can drive LED's directly (20
mA/pin).

You can also drive IGBT's directly with this microcontroller.

Regards,

Arnoud.
