[Diy_efi] Questions regarding odd coil-per-plug coils....

Hi!

I signed up only a few days ago. I am working on a project to convert my
CIS-based fuel injection system with distributor-based electronic
ignition to a EFI setup with a coil-per-plug setup. The engine in
question is a 5-cylinder Audi engine. I have sourced 550cc/min
injectors, I'll be going for a existing aftermarket ECU that can do
firing of 5 individual ignition coils (honestly, these seem to be rare).

I have also managed to source some pencil-style ignition coils.
Unfortunately, my knowledge on the workings of coils is near
non-existant.

The coils in question are also an odd tail as I don't know what vehicle
they came from. They were basically found lying in a shop and had been
there for a while, so I got them. I am familiar with Bosch connectors,
but I don't often see GM-style connectors so I was hoping someone here
would be willing to look at the connectors on these coils and see if
they recognise them and could perhaps give me details on how to wire
these things up.

>From doing some checks with a connectivity meter I can put forward the
following information. First, these items don't have any integrated
modules, so they have to be controlled by a ECU (is that right?). The
coils have a 3-pin connector. Looking at the photo given in the URL
below, name the pins 1 to 3 from left to right. The tab on the right is
a mounting tab. From checking, pin 1 and 3 are connected, pin 2 is
connected to the mounting tab. Pin 2 to mounting tab path makes me think
that is a ground connection. Also, below the head of the coil is a pin
which is soldered onto the outer jacket around the stem of the coil and
this is also a ground of some sort as it is connected to pin 2. You can
see the soldered joint just below the tab to the right of the picture.

There are 2 orientation tabs on the inside of the connector.

Here is the link to the picture of the coil connector:

What do you folks make of this connector? It looks like stuff seen on
items for GM systems.

Any ideas how I'd wire this up? The ECU I am after puts out a ground
signal to turn on the coil. My thinking here is that pins 1 and 3 are
the primary coil wired up to the ECU. One of these is hooked up to the
ground signal from the ECU, the other is a +12v. But what does pin 2 do?
This is where my brilliance with coils shines through. NOT! I reckon pin
2 is a +12V supply for the secondary, is that right?

Well, thanks to anyone who can shed some light on these. They seem to be
according to some standard, but ofcourse that standard is what I'm after
and having no history for these coils doesn't help. :)

Thanks.

G.
