I've been mulling about the pros and cons of a twin throttle arrangement =
with turbos, with an ECU controlled pre-throttle. As far as I can see =
there are 3 areas where this may be of use
1. Faster spool up (as used in some twin turbo setups)
2. Less boost loss during shifts
3. Increase efficiency at less than full power.
3. Is the one that is causing me concern, mainly because I just don't =
have the in-depth to work out a few things. Basically there would =
appear to be efficiency gains at medium power levels as you can throttle =
the inlet to keep the turbo in a more efficient operating point, with =
the hope being that gains here overcome the losses with the turbo having =
to deal with a restriction. The problem I see is that this often pushes =
you right up to the surge line, which may or may not be acceptable at =
pressures close to atmospheric.
But I keep reading and thinking. One day it will make sense.
