Looking a little more, it might take an IRF5305L mosfet 
and a CD4541BCN timer ($2.53), and a few mis pieces 
to get the job done automatically.  Or maybe just the 
mosfet and an RC.  If there were a lot of difficult cases 
that could use this, a model could be worked up.
