No I dont think you udnerstand,

I recall the main issue being that WI couldnt be used too often
because it required a major engine rebuild if done so. And I
am presuming they only carried enough water to use in flight
emergencies in perhaps dogfight situations for limited use.

The gist of it was, that dumping a large amount of water into
the engine gave a large boost in output, clearly they would
exhaust their water supply quickly and naturally prefer to
carry ammo instead. The inference was, that the WI used on the
spitfire was rather unconventional it wasnt a primary knock
deterent for continuous operation. But for a 'get me out of
trouble mode' with dramatic increase in power output presumably
in conjunction with other engine controls.
