I once had to tap a blind hole into an engine block.  But 
try finding a bottoming tap on short notice.  So I tapped 
in with a taper tap, then cut the tapered end off of the 
tap with my dremel's cutoff wheel, filed the edges of the 
tap a little and made my own bottoming tap.  Worked 
beautifully.
