Adrian,
I don't think any of the hobbiests re-flash their Ford computer. Every
thing I have seen is a "piggyback" to the J3 port or an interface with the
main connector.
I currently tune my 1994 Mustang GT with a Shiftmaster EEC Tuner. I have
pretty much full control depending on which software package I use.
You probably want to find a EEC-IV computer that has the model A9L, it is
the most strongly supported and best understood among the Ford fanatics.
Here're some links to get you started:
http://www.eec-tuner.com/
This is the Shiftmaster EEC-Tuner "piggyback" controller I use on my J3
port. I connect with my laptop and make changes. Shiftmaster has software
that you can download NOW and look it over.
I use Paul Both's modification of the Shiftmaster software so that I can
data log my 1994.
http://home.attbi.com/~pabooth/software.html
Raymond runs the website below and sells the TWEECER unit which connects at
the main plug to the Ford computer. The TWEECER may give you some more
capabilities that I don't have in with the EEC Tuner, Raymond knows both the
TWEECER and EEC Tuner very well and is an excellent resource.
http://iwantperformance.net/2index.htm
Raymond also runs a great Email forum hosted on Yahoo, that's where I get
most of my help tunning: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/eectuner/
Joshua Teixeira, SHO NUT Performance at www.shonutperformance.com runs a
pretty powerful SHO Tarus and is very knowlegable on the Ford computers. He
also sells the TWEECER and EEC Tuner. Very helpful.
This is a pretty slick data logging setup that works with Ford computers:
http://www.sneec.com/
I would recomend you check out some of these links before just buying just
any old Ford computer. All of these contollers need to interface with
specific models of the Ford computer. I do think you could do some serious
experimentation in the lab with the right combination of parts and software.
Good luck with your project,
Dan Nicoson

Subject: [Diy_efi] EEC-IV questions
I am a grad student involved in my school's Formula SAE team. We
currently use a Motec M4, but we only have the one and they are extremely
expensive. The ubiquitous availability of the EEC-IVs from junkers makes
them dirt cheap compared to the Motec. It would be great to have another
system for dyno work and engine development. Plus I can apply what I learn
to my own car. I'm also interested in putting together a fuzzy logic engine
control system so I have a few questions regarding the EEC-IV.
1. Can the EEC-IV be completely reprogrammed, ie. a whole new program
written to the EPROM? Or are you limited to playing with the maps?
2. Does anyone know of any examples of it having been done if it is
possible?
3. My background is in software so I don't know a lot about electronics.
Is there an inexpensive board or RS-232 adapter I can use reprogram the
EPROM via the J3 connector on the EEC-IV? Or maybe plans for constructing
one?
4. Have any do-it-yourselfers put together a fuzzy logic engine control?
I know some of the auto maufacturers have applied fuzzy logic in some of the
control systems.
5. Is there a compiler for the 8061 or are you limited to assembly
language? I could write my own compiler for a C-like language, but why
reinvent the wheel if you don't have to?
