[Diy_efi] Adapting Ion Sensing systems

Adam,
I guess I didn't word my request well. My Mustang works fine as far as the
Ford EEC and the EEC Tuner allow me to plug any numbers into the advance
tables that I want. The problem is optimizing those numbers.
My point in pursuing ion sensing is the real-time control they can provide
(or so all the technical papers say). It appears from the tech papers that
you can have your cake and eat-it-too! Great power, good mileage and still
meet emissions. Believe it or not, with my daily driver and $2.00/gallon
gas AND smog checks I need the "whole cake".
As a shade tree tuner without a nice dyno cell, optimizing a spark table
with aftermarket cylinder heads, cam etc. is purely trial and error
regardless if one just wants max power OR emissions. Worse than trial and
error, I have yet to see much of a way to optimize spark advance except to
advance until knock and then back off some. Of course on a boosted
application this isn't a very good procedure.
Anyway, I was hoping someone had stumbled on a project that was in the
DIY-useful stage. I have seen that several are in the works but I don't
think they have put it out to us mere mortals yet. That's why I was hoping
someone was hacking a factory unit by now...
Thanks,
Dan

No. It relies on knowing the plug resistance and coil
to which it is attached.

Well, there HAS to be SOME spark control on your
vehicle, or obviously, it would not run.
Harley's Delphi system allows the maximum spark
advance without detonation, and is fairly primitive as
ion sensing systems go. It's primarily for emissions
control. I'd say a good ignition with a 3D (really a
2D, but 3D is the "convention" for describing it at
this point) alpha-n map should be fine for your
purposes, provided you don't need to meet spog specs
at any point.
