In Australia there is a fixing known as a toggle bolt. It is a 
screw and nut with "ears"
and a "u" piece which toggles on the nut. It will allow you to 
fix to the larger hole, from
inside. A variation of the theme has two spring loaded "wings". 
Hope you can find some.
