The bottle that came with it (BAR 84) is the correct calibration gas for the machine. It CANNOT be calibrated properly with propane. It can be tested with propane. The gas contents of the BAR 84 will be listed on the bottle. Bring up calibration on the menu. Find the calibration gas port on the back of the machine. Plug the bottle with regulator attached into the port and set your pressure at 3 PSI. Select calibrate from menu and it will do just that. Usually the machine will ask the contents of your calibration gas. As long as the readings match within limits of what's on the bottle, it's callibrated. The 'bench' is the part of the machine that tests the gas. If this is shot, there will be an error. To replace the bench is about $800. The BAR 84 gas can be purchased from NAPA. Ski

Already done, Geoff. diy_efi is deliberately chartered as widely as
possible, although the notice at the top of the diy_efi page may not
read quite that way. It was written back in 1996 or something, maybe I
should update it. Anyway, if it's related to engine management, and not
more applicable to one of the other lists, then it's explicitly
acceptable on diy_efi.
