I had a look at using a 555 timer some time ago. My ideas were 
for a multi cyl, using GM sensors. And an o2 sensor to provide 
feed back to close the loop.
If your still interested I could email block diagrams etc. I 
must stress however, the ideas have
not been put into practise yet.
