I don't have the statistics and I don't have time to look them up, but I
believe that a significantly larger amount of diesel fuel is burned than
gasoline in the US. The largest transportation fuel user is semi
trucks. So if I remember right and more diesel is burned and it's is
responsible for only half of the NOx than it must be cleaner. Also most
of the diesel is burned in heavy trucks which have much lower emission
standards than passenger cars in the US.
