I've been a lurker for quite a while and once in a while something pops up
that I can help with. For reasonably priced custom wire sets, check out
Seth Emerson @ http://www.siliconewire.com/. He has the ability to make
any kind of wire set you need.

It's surely possible, I used an EDIS from a 90's escort to dump the
distributor on my '84 Nissan KingCab 4x4, and the difference was impressive
and immediately obvious. I used a MegaSquirt II/3.0 ECU to send it advance
timing, and that works very well also. Eventually I will finish the MS II
side of it with tuned port fuel injection, but that is going slowly as I am
having to design my own fuel rail and intake, since the z24 engine never
came with port injection. The EDIS system is very reliable, well designed,
and easy to find in junkyards. It does require a 36-1 wheel and sensor, but
these are easy to find/buy also. The spark from the ford coilpacks can only
be described as intimidating. I am not looking forward to ever being
shocked by one. The Ford coils do have a non-standard, snap-lock connector
on the plug wires, but just use some 1/4" rope to get some good length
measurements between your coilpack mounting location and your plugs on the
target engine, then go shopping down at the junkyard. Get the Motorcraft
wires ONLY, and they will almost always be fine. A testament to how well
built they are is the number of Fords in the JY that still have the original
wires on them. They can actually last longer than the car. The reason for
doing it this way is that the likelihood of a pre-made wire set down at the
parts store matching your TOTALLY nonstandard application is practically
zero.

I've got DIS on the 3.4l in my MGA. Now, I spent some lovely, relaxing time
in the cold sunshine yesterday tinkering on my Jeep Family Wagon, and as I
was cleaning the cap and rotor, I started thinking about how nice it would
be to have DIS on the daily diver too!

The Jeep has a "Cam Position Sensor" in the distributor, so that would have
to stay to satisfy the PCM. It also has a "Crank Position Sensor" on the
bell housing, reading off the flexplate, and that would likley have to be
left there to satisfy the PCM as well. So, I'm thinking I'd have to add
another Crank Position Sensor , either on the bell housing somehow
(depending on the number of notches on the flexplate), or on the crank
pulley.

The Jeep also has no knock sensor, so that would have to be bolted onto the
block somewhere.

Now, I understand that Ford EDIS may be easier to add on to a system like
this, but i have no experience with EDIS -never even seen one! On the other
hand, there's a spare GM DIS module with pigtails sitting in the garage...
I know that at some point, Jeep went to some form of DIS on the 4.0l, but
that was several PCMs later than mine. I imagine getting that hooked up
would be as much work as a GM or FOrd setup, but I don't know for sure.

I know there are threads about putting DIS on a number of vehicles, but I
don't remember ever seeing this particular upgrade. I figured that, with
the board being so slow, I'd ask if anyone can comment on the feasibility
(and maybe the details) of upgrading a 1996 4.0l I6 Jeep engine to some kind
of DIS?

Happy New Year, folks!
