If you are using RS232, you are probably transferring NMEA data which is 
a well documented format. There are multiple "sentences" which contain 
various data sets, you just need to know which one, $GPGSA, $GPRMC, 
$GPGGA, $GPGSV. etc, the ecu is using. Garmin does also use a 
proprietary format which they have documented.
