need help getting started

 I am new here and need a little info on what I need to do to get 
started programming gm computers.

 I have plenty of experience building high performance engines and 
tuning (mostly Big Block Chevys and 455 Pontiacs). I have also helped 
build and tune a 9 second Camaro using a DFI computer on a Small 
block. 

 What I need to know it what I need to start reprograming 747 
computers for some of my cars I wish to convert to EFI. What type of 
eprom programer will I need and what sort of software is there? I 
have seen mastertune in a magazine, but it seems a bit expensive, is 
there any shareware out there? What types of chips will I need to 
buy? I took the one out of a 746 and could not match it up with 
anything at the electronics store. 
 My engines are modified far enough that I know no stock calibrations 
are going to work right. But anything somebody else has done similar 
might give be a starting point to look at.

 Any help would be great.
