TPS failures - better designs?

As I reply to myself while brainstorming!
How about an optical encoder with analog output... LED and Phototransistor 
with a disk between them that has a gradually denser optical 
characteristic?  as it rotates, it becomes darker (or lighter) and the 
output is a 0-5V signal....
