The way to go if one wants something that is not affected by the environment
like a Pot is to use a Digital encoder. A one turn encoder is available in a
hardened industrial form by any of several controls suppliers. PLC direct,
allen-bradley, toshiba, etc. The problem as stated earlier is cost - but if
you have a digital line in then it is the way to go. - It would be very
possible if one wanted to run the digital output to a DAC and run that to an
ECM. Or just be careful not to spray the TPS with the hose when engine
cleaning.
