Junkers had flying Diesels in WWII. For a time in the 1940s it looked
like Diesel was the wave of the future. The engines were heavier, but
no more expensive, and there was a significant weight savings in flight
weight since Diesel fuel is lighter than avgas. Not to mention a hell
of a lot cheaper, and less likely to catch fire in a crash or when
someone strafes you.

The development of the gas turbine cut the knees out from under
aviation Diesel development.
