ALDL 160 --> 8,192 baud conversion?

I understand that it's possible to upgrade the '808/'277 by
adding the high speed ALDL 28 pin chip (U2). I even recall
that one (re)manufacturer adds this chip and changes the
firmware (PROM) to make use of the 8192 baud data stream
(so their data acquisition software has a chance of capturing
data at a reasonable speed).
What is this 28 pin chip? Can I get it from a chip manufacturer?
Is it a UART or a level converter chip (or both) for true RS232?
