Bruce. I've been over this issue and suggest the HC12 because it's faster, has a
BDM connection, and is instruction compatable with the HC11. There is a version
with 32K EEPROM. I have the URL at work - will add later.
There are also PICs available that do pascal or basic --------- I'm using a PIC
in my fuel pump comtroller. easy to do simple things in a very small PIC.

and a third option - I can't remember the name but it's fast and high level
