The BMW style thermostat regulates the water temperature to the water pump.
It blends cold water from the radiator and hot water from the engine outlet.
The engine has full water circulation at all times and when hot, no water
can bypass the radiator.  Also, over-cooled water cannot be fed to the
block.  Many newer engines use this type of water control.
