Why not a private news server?

No, they don't.

A private news server (remember I said server not usenet group) would be setup with

a username and password so only those authorized can post and view messages.  It's
the same as how public usenet servers are setup, except the messages would not be
exchanged with other servers as they are in usenet, eliminating the troubles that
come with usenet.  The group would exist as it currently does, except the bandwidth

utilization would be drastically reduced.  Also the messages would not be indexed
by Deja news or anyone else.

Even the free NNTP server that comes with the NT option pack allows for a local,
private group that is not pulled by other servers and can only be viewed and posted
to by
participants.  Admin's would have full control.

Heck, I could set this up right now for demonstration purposes except I am behind a

firewall.
