I'd do a complete tune-up, including wires, fresh oil change, yep hot fans
settings, and some of the fuel additives to help pass, and get it pretested.
Then go to the station for the test.
If you fail the pretest then worry about fooling with the chip.
If the cat is good, from what you discribe shouldn't be too hard
