I would recommend the HC161's.  The biggest difference is going to be how
much current the outputs can source or sink and what the input signals'
voltage levels will be.  If you are not bringing in any analog signals (i.e.
the counters are receiving inputs from another digital chip like an
oscillator) that should be fine.  If you want to drive LEDs with the
counters outputs you should still be okay but be careful of current draw.
If you ARE driving LEDs, see if Digi-key has a 74ACT161 or 74ACQ161, they
have high output current drives.

In summary, 74HC161's should be fine.  If you want to be absolutely sure,
I'd need to see your circuit diagram.

I have a wiring diagram for my DIS signal generator that uses two 74LS161s.
I have been every where locally and no one has them.   I have found some
similiar part nos. at Digi-Key,  those being a:
DM74S161-ND,   and a
MM74HC161N-MM
Can I use these?, one perferable to the other?, what's the difference in the
three.
