After looking at the Vortec intake manifold used on pickups, I wonder
if that might make a nice crossram type of base.  Nice large, long
runners that curve inward toward the plenum instead of ending with a
sharp edge that forces the air to make a 90 degree  turn.  It would
require fabbing a top plate though.
