A/F gauges and O2 sensors.

I'm scanning the DIY digest I noticed a thread on wide band O2, A/f meters
etc. I have a Autometer A/F gauge in the car, and wired it (per the
instructions)by splicing into the 02 wire before the ECM. In the thread the
comment was made that just Y-ing into the )2 wire would cause the ECM to
make the car run rich. Is this something I need to worry about, or is it
just a problem with wide band 02s?
