Call for standards: EPROM/cal editing software

I've recently become more involved in a couple
different projects to develop EPROM/cal editing
software for different ECMs/cals.
>From the research I've done into things so far, it
seems that the authors of most of the S/W packages
are fairly close to having the same or similar
ECM table definition files (TDFs). However, close,
as they say, only counts in Horseshoes and Hand
Grenades.
What I'd like to propose is that we work to define a
standard for TDFs. This standard would have the
following requirements:
1)Be portable across all operating environments.
2)Be Human Readable and easily defineable. (ie ASCII)
3)Would allow the user to define any size table or
single value, including the appropriate conversion
factors/formulas to convert the hex value to
meaning-
ful data.
4)Would include appropriate labels for the tables and
indexes
5)Would include offset addresses of tables and parms.
6)Would allow any subset of tables to be defined,
ie, you wouldn't have to use all the tables, unless
you wanted to.
I've uploaded a file into ftp.diy-efi.org/incoming
called table.ini. It's a sample TDF format file
written by Warren Bowley. It's pretty self-explanitory
in terms of where the addresses, indexes, and scales
get defined.
I'd appreciate comments on the format, or any alter-
native filespecs that you would feel woul make a
good base for a TDF standard. This will be a public
domain standard.
The intent here is not to start a Holy War over
file specifications and which EPROM/cal editor is
the best, but to develop a mechanism by which all
editors can operate off the same data. This will
allow folks to use whichever product they feel
comfortable with, or supports their hardware/OS.
Feel free to mail me privately if you don't want
to discuss your suggestions out in the public arena.
I'll try to roll the best of whatever floats to the
top into a draft standard for public approval.
Thanks,
