I think tis easier then that.
Autos give you addition torque multiplication (via converter), but the down
side is slippage (slippage is a waste of heat energey).
Not wasting this heat energy gives ya some HP.
Depending on converter, this slippage can be 7-15%.
Down side, is all that more inertia to change speeds SUDDENLY during a gear
change.
