Relocating IAT sensor?

When I did mine I just left the old sensor in place and bought a new one and 
mounted it in the air filter intake. My IAT now reads the same as my outdoor 
air temp, as opposed to 100 degrees warmer. I do not know if it did anything 
other than make me feel good that the reading was more accurate.
