The manner in which I'm looking at the 4 Cyl is how the manifold signal is
in comparison to a 6 or 8 Cyl. V engines obviously are firing bank to
bank,
with the intake plenum arranged accordingly. The 4 Cyl Intake is drawing
on a single branch as compared to the V Engines. With 1-3-4-2 firing
order
there's not much time per cycle to smooth the pulsations of the 4s
personality.
To employ a 2.8 TBI , the plenum area needs some rework to smooth the
flow into the runners and to minimize cross feeding. [Comparing to V
Engines].

The 7747 is an interesting experiment in the face of much work to end up
      going back to a 165 . I saw a post regarding use of a 7730 and 8d set to
4 cylinders. In my way of thinking , 4Cyl PFI would make more sense from
      the overall combination's workability.
Seems the 165 in 4 Cyl trim is just 1/2 Batch Fire as would be a 7730 set
in 4 Cyl Mode. Now , if 7747 could be successfully be set to 4 Cyl
Mode and
all hardware is matched , that would be a viable combination as well.
Bottom line , Why reinvent the wheel. IMO.
