I think that hybrid (electric/internal-combustion) will obviate the
need for "conventional" geartrain systems - each wheel will have an
electric motor. I'm sure developing technology will ensure that very
high output for short periods (from both electric motors and batteries)
will solve any performance problems hybrids have now.
