Sounds like the plugs fouled and miss-fired. Then seeing all that O2, the
ECM was adding fuel. Now that the VE is closer, is the O2 reading
making any sense?

Search net for +O2 +sensor +test, there is a paper or two out there
detailing testing with a propane torch & dvm.
