I'm quite sure that the non-uniform timing will cause problems.  Some
timing stuff in the ECM is controlled by the "current" distributor
reference pulse, some by the previous.

The ECM also calculates a lot of values based on the time between two
reference pulses.  If these vary, all rpm related and timing advance
calculations will be wrong.
