That's a cam position sensor.  Look at it, it's a shutter wheel type sensor. 
I'm thinking hall effect here.  I've considered making a new stamped steel wheel
with the appropriate notches for the v8 distributor but I've never followed
through.

Cam sensor plus crank sensor will do it.
