Hi Peter,

Message structure byte names
  Message Identification Byte (MIB)
  Message Length Byte
  Data Byte #1...Data Byte #n
  Checksum Byte

In some messages, Data Byte #1 is also the "Function Mode Number".
As in Mode $01 - transmit aldl data or mode $0A - clear DTC etc.

In mode $01 messages, Data Byte #2 is also the "Message Number"
As in mode $01, transmit aldl message $00.

Electronic modules are called:
  Master (if it is the bus master)
  Remote (all other modules)
  Tester (Scan tool)
