In the beginning there was the Muncie 4-speed "rock crusher" transaxle. 
All was well.  Then CAFE requirements caused a need for overdrive
transaxles.  Enter the Isuzu 5-spd.  It was weak because it used pot
metal internal parts.  GM only mated it with 4 cylinders.  In the
meantime, GM designed a 5-spd transaxle, presumably with help from
Getrag.  The "Getrag" was first used in 86 3/4 V6 Fieros.  Starting in
1987, it showed up in manual transmission 2.8 equipped vehicles.  A
common place to find them is in the Beretta and Corsica.  Versions were
also used with the Quad-4 and turbo 2.0.  There is a stronger/different
version of the Getrag that was used in manual transmission 3.4 DOHC
W-bodies.  BTW, GM parts catalogs call the Getrag a Muncie.
