What do these numbers mean?

I have a 305 TPI from a 1986 TransAm. The then engine number is: 2GN207358, but
I never saw the car the engine was from so I had no VIN. I called Pontiac, and
they could not cross the engine number to a VIN. However, the engineer gave me
some numbers to make a complete VIN:
1G2FW87F 2GN207358
1 = U.S.
G = GM
2 = Pontiac
FW = TransAm
87 = hard top (not convertible)
F = fuel injection
2 = I was told this is a, "check digit"... "is not important"
G = 1986
N = Norwood (assembly plant)
207358 is the numerical sequence.
I want to purchase a whole rebuilt computer. My local parts stores are looking
for an F, G, or H code. Some people tell me the 8th digit of the VIN is what
they want. In the case above that would be F. However.... If F = fuel
injection, why would NAPA say it could be F, G, or H?
I have not been asked if it is automatic transmission, or manual, or anything
else. Why, are the automatic and manual computers the same?
TIA
