code 44 - why?

I had an interesting experience with my TPI setup in the past 2 days since
I got it running. It's a 1989 MAF '165 system on a 5.0L with TPI.
I have been using AUJM (350, auto, 3.27, FED) and it keeps setting code 44
on me. I switched over to a APYS (305,M5,3.45) and the problem goes away...
Could someone please explain why I see this behavior? I checked through
the archives and found a few tidbits that lead me to believe it's just a
case of the definition of what is lean and what is rich...? What I don't
understand is why it would be different for different engine
displacements. Could it be because the O2 sensor is sensitive to the extra
back pressure a 350 (as opposed to a 305) would apply against a set of
factory exhaust manifolds?
