"Are the crankshaft positioning sensors on these engines behind the
timing cover and part of the crank? If so, anyone know of an
aftermarket
wheel that would work when adapting this to other engines?

And the cam sensor looks like its in the distributor, is that right?
"

Cam sensor is in the distributor, yes..

Crank sensor is under the timing cover, and the tone wheel is like $16
from GM, less if you can get it from a discount GM parts dealer. If you
are going to use it on a small block chevy, just buy the timing
cover, the tone wheel, and the sensor, and bolt it up. It'll fit behind
a stock water pump. If you are oign to do it on another car, then bolt
the sensor and wheel to the crank pulley. Rig up a sensor mount, and go
from there.

As for intakes and TB's for the L31. All GM IACs work the same, just
different connectors. I would have to guess you would have to tweak the
IAC tables to idle right, maybe not, tackle the issues when they arise.

As for TPI intakes. To run the L31 heads, you need a different lower
intake to match with the raised intake ports. That, and TPI intakes
don't flow very well. You'd spend $399 on the lower, then another few
hundred to get the high flow runners. Just modify an LT1 intake for a
distributor, mount some bungs in the intake for coolant management and
be done with it.
