if we are talking 2.2 2.5 dis then this is how it works. 

  uses a 6x ref pulse. 60* notches six of them. then a odd man out 10* btdc. 
thats notch 7 it is the sinch notch for the module. 

  the moduel hanldes conversion of the crank signal into a hmoginized 2x per 
revolution signal that the ecm would typically see with a distributor 
application. the notch sequnce for a .23 2.4 sohc dohc quad series engine is the same 
but the refernce pulse has been moved and i dont remeber to exact were. 

   either way the module handles the signal conversions and the ecm simply 
changes the duty cylce on the est control line to handle timing.
