VSS figures into more than you might think.  It's involved in idle, as
the computer doesn't attempt to control idle until VSS is zero.  It also
resets the IAC position above a certain speed.  It's involved in
cannister purge, and maybe other things also.  Given that it's easy to
install with one of the inline sensors, there's no reason not to have
it.  Plenty of stories in the archives from people who had idle or other
problems until they installed the VSS.
