[Gmecm] Geting rid of electronic transmission.

Hi, Doug.

I've seen way too many trans killed due to excessive loading & heating.
I wouldn't think one man's good luck should be the deciding factor.
Especially when there are so many stories of doom and destruction
around. Stock configuration 700 does not cool when TCC is unlocked in
4th. But GM manual says "Don't tow in 4th." I've had to O'haul
trannies that have been burnt up by towing in 4th. The stink is almost
unbearable! The trans fluid can get burnt so badly that the odor
clears the shop. So I think GM's probably got the right idea... don't
tow in 4th.

Cooling is a big deal for the 700. Biiig cooler help much. Some body
designs don't seem to move as much air around the transmission so
proper cooling is even more important in these vehicles. I think the
Astro may be better than some others in this regard, but I probably
don't have a large enough sample to make a definite conclusion.

For tcc control without an ECM you need to obtain a 4th gear switch if
your trans doesn't have one. It's originally used to tell the ecm that
the trans is in 4th by making a connection to ground. This switch
should be connected to the control side of a relay, which in turn
connects either power or ground to the TCC. For additional convenience
a factory brake switch can be connected in series in the relay control
circuit to unlock tcc when the brake is depressed. And to make TCC
operation smoother and less intrusive there are vacuum switches and
various other switches which can be used as well. I believe some
google searches will come up with nice diagrams and pictures of
different ways to do this. The 700R4 retrofit is fairly popular, and
most of 'em end up going with TCC lockup, either because they heed
warnings, or because they learn by experience.

Good luck.
Zaphod

Along these lines, can anybody point me to the details about
modifying the
700R4 so that it's always in lockup in 4th gear?

The vehicle in question is a '90 Astro with a 4.3l V6. When I'm towing
I
pay close attention and make sure to stay out of 4th gear non-lockup,
but
I'd like to not have have to do this.

The original transmission only lasted 180k miles and I'd like the
second one
to last a little longer. ;-)

Thank you,

For perspective, the 700R4 has taken somewhere around 15 years for the
combination of GM and the aftermarket to fix. GM's answer is really
about
the best, remove the valve body and replace it with solenoids.
Although there are some good fixes for the mechanical version in the
aftermarket. But I agree that there are too many failures in the
700R4/4L60E trans family. The E series failures seem to be most common
in
V6 powered trucks, especially S series vehicles. Prolly a combination
of
vehicle weight, insuficient cooling, and excessive shifting and
converter
locking/ unlocking. It was no surprise when a friend asked me in
December
if he could replace his 4L60E with a 700R4, just to keep the beater
running.
What better opportunity to find out if it will work? The ecm performed
with
no problems... didn't even light the check engine light (to my
surprise).
We rewired the TCC through the brake switch and the 4th gear switch in
the
trans so he'd get lockup and converter cooling in 4th, and all was well.
For about a month... then the 700R4 died. And last month, his next
beater,
an Olds Bravada with 4L60E, puked a trans also. lol!

So go ahead and make the swap. Don't forget to make sure the TV cable
is
connected and adjusted properly. I've seen 700R4's die in less than a
week
due to misadjustment.

The experts on this list are usually way over my head, so who better
to
ask?
 I just bought a 94 K1500 Chevy pickup with a blown 4l60E transmission.
   I have a high performance/towing 700R4 4x4 trans with only a couple
miles
on it.
Question is will this screw up the computer if I don't connect the
transmission wiring.
I planned to change to the TV cable and correct TBI from a 92.
The trans is setup with TCC to automatically engage in OD unless I
manually shut it off.
 The ecm is 16196395 BJLH.
I need to know if the 4 inputs wires on the trans affect the engines
outputs or are they strictly for transmission control.
 They are:
 B4 5v ground
 F1 trans mode A
 E5 " " B
 E4 " " C
The 700R4 Cost over $1600 to have built and I don't like the record
of the
4L60E's anyway.
 Think it will work?
 JD
