Thanks David,
My signal source won't be a points setup, but that is very interesting info
all the same.  It will be an MSD 6010 ignition controller that manages the
spark on late model LSx engines.  It was intended for people who want
to use carbs, but I'd like to use a 7749 for fuel.  I have most of the parts
on hand and want to do it inexpensively while learning as much as I can.
  I fell into a really cheap 2001 LR4 crate engine last year and that helped
to define my current direction.   That, and I really like the 7749 ECM and
want to use it in this project if I can.   The MSD 6010 plugs directly the
LSx family coil-near-plug sub-harness and acts as a programable ignition
controller for both one and two-bar GM MAP sensors.   The manual shows
  a wire that provides a 12v tack signal.  This looks like a simple way to run
an LS1 family engine with just about any V8 ECM.  I may be wrong  8-(
but II intend to try it.  The vehicle is a 1946 Chevy panel truck.
It is long way from "done" at the moment.
