Removing the battery and grounding the live lead is recommended if MIG or 
Tig welding (Tig inparticular with high frequency high voltage scratchless 
start)
Normal low voltage stick and wirefeed (mig or fluxcore) is LESS likely to 
cause a problem. I've never had an issue welding without removing the 
battery - it might just be luck, but generally I don't have a lot of that.
