[Gmecm] TBI for 455 Olds

Will the 80+ Olds Cutlass distributors (probably Olds 350s) fit the 455? If so, I read that at least some of them had a computer controlled distributor, for electronic spark timing. You could reuse one of those with the TBI setup pretty handily.

If not, it's not a huge undertaking. You mainly need to lock out the vacuum advance (somebody makes a plate that installs in place of the vac advance unit), then swap the module and its harness - you should be able to use any GM large-cap module and module harness. You may need to cut a notch in the edge of the distributor housing to allow for the wiring for the computer connection.

I don't know about the 454 programming, for some reason I think it would be lean (when off-idle at least) for a 455, and I'd bet the timing advance curves would be quite a bit off. But I would think it should be enough to start it and begin tuning.

Subject: [Gmecm] TBI for 455 Olds

Greetings all. I have a few general questions for the group:

I have a 455 (a 1976 model year engine) and 700R trans (non-electronic speedo gear) installed in a 1946 Olds.

I want to install a TBI setup on this engine and was wondering what kinda Ignition (distributor) could I use - it has an HEI (stock) on it now?

Also - I'm thinking about using the computer programming from a 454 - either an SS model or a pickup. Would I be within performance parameters (I just want a good driver - no performance camshaft but with an aluminum intake).

And, finally, what would you all suggest as to the fuel pump to use? I've converted other cars over to TBI but have always been able to use the distributor from the donor vehicle. In the case of my 455 - there are no donor TBI units that I am aware of.

What are the thoughts about my project?

Thanks. Wade.
