~ I'll bet if you 'scope the TTL input with the pickup hooked up, you'll
~ see that the pickup's loaded down too much.  Try running the pickup through
~ a high impedance saturated switch (e.g., N-channel JFET in common source mode
~ with a protective diode across the gate/source) and seeing what happens.
