Seems to me engine controllers would be a prime candidate for fuzzy logic
controllers.  Especially the EGO system.  There are fuzzy logic tools
available for most microcontrollers these days, along with some controllers
specifically designed for it.  Might be something to look into.  Neural
networks would be a bit overkill, though, IMHO.
