Look at the National Semi book, I am using the LM2940, and the LM2925, which
are both Automotive rated, can handle work down to a small amount over the
regulated output (less then 1 Volt) are spike and reverse protected. You
will have to do a bit more to clean up some of the other Automotive noise,
but that should not be too bad.
