I've got a 80C552 (Philips 8051) board nearly routed, and the way
things are going, it should be controlling an engine by the year 2010
or so.. I seem to remember the 80C535 has a similar set of capture
and compare registers to the 80C552.
Another alternative is the Siemens 80C537. There is an 80C537 SBC
design in the June 1997 issue of Elektor magazine. It has all the
features of the 552, as well as running twice as fast, and having a
nifty 16 bit multiplication/division unit. It looks like the ducks
guts for engine management. I might get one if the 552 board doesn't
work.
