GM HEI

Can anyone confirm when the big cap HEI's went computer controlled,
meaning no vacuum or centrifugal advance. Specifically on the Chevy 250
and 292 straight 6 motors? I have heard somewhere around 1982/83 does
anyone have any idea.  Second question, might the newer computer
controlled HEI modules fit into the older non-computer distributors...
